Studio XPS 16 Users - BIOS Update Brick Fix

To all the users that have bricked there computer from installing a BIOS Update, follow these instructions!

First, lets see if your computer really has a brick, press the power button and if the keyboard is dim (If you have a lightup keyboard), and the mute, volume up, and volume down buttons blink, and then about 15 seconds later the keyboard goes full brightness and then your computer shuts off, this means your computer has it's motherboard bios bricked.

Requirements for recovery

  1. An extra computer (With a 32BIT Operating System!)
  2. A USB flash drive (1GB will do)
  3. Patience

Instructions for recovery

  1. Download and extract the files in the following link to a new folder on the desktop (http://www.mediafire.com/file/bytzt1zdmmj/Dell BIOS Recovery A11 For Studio XPS 16.zip)
  2. Plug in your USB Flash Drive
  3. BACK UP YOUR FLASH DRIVE! IT WILL BE FORMATTED (All data erased)
  4. Go to the folder on your desktop that you extracted the recovery files and execute WINCRIS.EXE
  5. Select the USB Flash drive to make the recovery disk on and click start and wait for it to finish
  6. If all is well, the program should say that the flash drive was created successfully
  7. Unplug the USB Flash drive from the extra computer and plug it into the bricked computer.
  8. Make sure the battery and AC Adapter is disconnected and the computer is off.
  9. Hold End for 3 SECONDS and plug in the AC Adapter while you release the End button
  10. Wait 15 seconds, your USB flash drive should be read and the lights will turn from solid amber to blinking
  11. If they are blinking, wait for it to get done, the computer will turn off, you will have no on screen confirmation
  12. Plug in the battery and AC Adapter and press the power button on the computer
  13. If everything went as expected, you will be prompted with your BIOS and your computer will be functional

Enjoy.

Special Thanks

  • NVT for the recovery files

Just bricked my XPS 16 after trying to upgrade the BIOS from A9 to A15, wanted to try this.. but unfortunately the file is no longer available on Mediafire, so anyone who knows another way to fix this problem?
