Studio XPS 16 keyboard issue

Hi - my 5 1/2 yr old laptop is having issues with the W,S,X keys. Often they don't work at all and other times they are OK. I took the buttons off and made sure there was nothing in the way when they are being pushed  and then sprayed the rubber membrane with computer cleaner from a Comp/USA can. This seems to help but later I have the same issues again. I do not think that its the drivers or Windows 7 as neither have changed since I bought the unit.

Question - Is this a common problem with laptops? Desktops are easier to fix and I have experience with them, but not so much with laptops.

Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

The issue seems to be related to loose connection between the plastic keys and keyboard circuit. However I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS required onto the system and install it.

Also, consider replacing the Keyboard on the system.

Hello - Thanks for the response. Can one replace the KB on a laptop?

Hi bioya1,

The keyboard on Dell Studio XPS 16 is a factory replaceable unit on the system you will need to contact a local computer technician who should be able to replace it.
