Studio XPS 16 with Two External Monitors
I have gotten quite a bit of conflicting information on this issue, so maybe someone here has actually tried it. The last Dell sales support guy I talked to told me no, only the VGA and HDMI ports would work, and they would display the same thing. I even asked him about the DisplayPort and he said it would not work.
So, my question is, with the Studio XPS 16, can you have two simultaneously running external displays, extending the windows desktop (showing different content)? If so, which combination of ports will work - VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort?
Thanks for any clarification you can provide...

Hey ptmurphy,
I have a Studio XPS 16 with a 4670 (the newer card with 1GB of memory). I have a Dell FPW24 widescreen monitor at 1920x1200 and a Dell LCD TV at 720p, or 1360x768. Here are the configurations I got to work:

The general rule of thumb seems to be that you cannot have different resolutions or screens coming out of the DisplayPort and HDMI. If you mirror the output, then it looks like you can use both DisplayPort and HDMI, but it's going to be the same screen.
If you use (DisplayPort or HDMI) AND the VGA connection, then you can support two monitors at different resolutions with an extended desktop.
Hope that helps. I love this laptop, but you should make sure it does what you want before you get it. I'm also not sure about resolutions above 1920x1200 because I don't have anything higher to test with.
If you do get the laptop, go with the RGBLED screen. It's the most amazing screen I've ever seen on a laptop. Makes movie pop.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I was having a heck of a time getting a consistent response out of Dell. You wouldn't believe some of the things I was told. One Dell support guy told me "Yeah, it has two USB ports, so you can use one for each monitor". LOL!
Thanks Again!

One more thing. I did find another post where a guy got HDMI and Display port working at the same time in extended desktop mode. He said he had to turn off "notebook panel" in Windows 7 in the Display Configuration Panel. Not sure if that will help you, but just in case...
