Touchpad driver/function issue on 1330
I have 6 XPS 1330 (2.4ghz, LED if that makes a difference on components) laptops and each of them suffers from the same problem. I reload them with Vista Enterprise (like Vista Business but probably more expensive :) ) and basic touchpad functionality works but the back/forth/scroll functions don't work. If I go into control panel to adjust things I get one of two things:
If I have the driver installed (dell is saying that I SHOULD have the 'dell touchpad' and use driver 10.1.2.A01) and I double-click the mouse icon it says 'unable to connect to synaptics touchpad, please remove the driver')
OR
If the driver is gone the mouse properties opens up fine but there are not Synaptics/Dell/Alps/Whatever tabs in there to make any adjustments
Device manager doesnt have any unkown devices in either situation but does not list any touchpads either...
Any clue as to what is going on?
Thanks
S

I know this message is a bit old but thought I'd respond just in case you never solved this problem or if someone else is having similar issues.
After being terribly frustrated with the Dell installed drivers for this touchpad and visiting Dell's driver section and being told that Dell drivers are the ONLY ones for this computer/touchpad/OS combo, I decided to pay synaptics website a visit - After all they make the touchpads!
Well, as Staples says, That Was Easy!
I just went to www.synaptics.com and downloaded generic touchpad driver file Synaptics_Driver_v10_1_8_Vista32.exe. It has you uninstall current drivers (go to device manager, click your device, choose driver tab, click uninstall. Its a bit scary as you wonder if the touchpad will operate at all without it but I found that a Microsoft driver automatically took over. I then simply ran the above file which installs the synaptics driver and software. It then has you reboot (of course! LOL! It wouldn't be Microsoft otherwise!) and when I did, I then was able to go through control panel, choose the touchpad and it now has the synaptics tab for all sorts of fine tuning.
