I would suggest you to update the BIOS, Video card driver and touchpad drivers in a sequence on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section, Video card driver from Video section and touchpad driver from ‘Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices’ section onto the system and install it.
I'll will keep this in mind. I yesterday uninstalled the latest driver (using that option in the settings of the touchpad) and reinstalled the latest driver right after that. This solved the problem with the gestures after a reboot. Everything works normal, for now. I'll write an update if the gestures should change again.
This worked at first, the touchpad gestures were normal again. But after entering sleep mode they changed again to opening search and the settings app. Any fix for this?
I encountered this same issue the other day on my Dell XPS 13 9333, and I have solved it today by uninstalling Dell Touchpad (from Programs and Features), and then installing the driver from the Dell website (v.19.0.15.2).
So now the 3-finger swipe gestures work as expected. However, now I cannot get the "Scroll inactive window when I hover over" to work under the touchpad, but it works just fine with a mouse. Any ideas?
I have an Inspiron 15R (5521, Late 2012). I downloaded the drivers using my service tag in the link you provided. In downloaded the following drivers and installed them in this order. I also rebooted after every installation. The problem occurs every time after leaving sleep mode. The touchpad gestures have changed to search and opening the settings app, eventhough the correct gestures are still listed in the Dell touchpad settings.

I too am having the exact same problem on my Insprion 7537. From a fresh boot or restart the gestures work as they should. Three-finger swipe away from you opens task view, and three-finger swipe towards you closes all windows. However, after closing and reopening the laptops lid (sleep) the gestures are not the same. Three-finger swipe away opens search (cortana) and three-fingers towards you opens settings.
I believe this to be an issue with the Dell touch pad drivers? When i remove the driver for the touch pad, no gestures work at all. Windows 10 reinstalls driver 19.0.15.2 which is newer than that on the Dell website for my model laptop.
I am experiencing this exact same problem on my Dell XPS 13 9333, where touchpad gestures would behave properly upon booting/restarting the computer, but would (70% of the time) revert to their old settings (e.g. three finger swipe down brings up the settings) whenever the computer wakes up from sleep mode.
I've already updated the touchpad drivers and the BIOS.
If the system is restored back to previous Windows version then of course thus issue won't reoccur as its a Widows 10 feature. I think the problem is with the Dell touchpad driver. Please can you escalate this to whichever department as a software bug.nks
So I've been experiencing this problem on and off (working as expected after a fresh boot, stops working after it wakes up from sleep, etc.) with my XPS 13 9333 w/ the latest Synaptics driver installed from the Dell website.
Now, just the other day I was using an Inspiron 15 5000 (this year's model), and by checking the settings I realized it had a "precision touchpad" (that is to say it's using generic Windows drivers when you take a look at Device Manager), which shows the settings for the touchpad in the Windows 10 Settings app, and everything seems to work much better (3-finger gestures always work, and scrolling without focus works as expected too).
So as you said, to me the problem seems clearly a Synaptics (Dell Touchpad) driver issue... if only we could get a generic Windows "precision touchpad" driver for these Dell laptop models experiencing problems, I bet everything would work much smoother...

The touchpad gestures changed again after putting my laptop into sleep mode. I will try your solution.

Hi DimitriVH,
Please reply us with exact system model you have and let us know if you used Windows 8 or 10 drivers to update the drivers.

I can't download this driver for my laptop. I can't find it on the Dell driver section, or do you have a link?

I already installed this BIOS and those drivers (listed in previous post) and these don't resolve the problem. Are there other ways to resolve this?

Hi DimitriVH,
I would suggest you to restore the system back to the previous windows installation and check if the issue reoccurs.
