USB Modem Driver Causing Crashes

I'm on the Inspiron N5110 laptop. I use the Sprint U600 USB Modem for my internet connection. I've had recurring blue screen crashes which I believe started around the time I installed the software for the modem about a year ago.

I get the blue screen error message saying DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and I have to restart the computer. This usually happens when the computer has been on for a while, or the connection is under heavy strain (downloads, websites with a large amount of pictures, etc.).

I ran the WhoCrashed program, and it's almost always the same problem for each crash:

On Fri 11/9/2012 3:36:20 AM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\windows\Minidump\110812-22339-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: difmmdm.sys (DIFMMdm+0xE1D5)
Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0x30, 0x2, 0x1, 0xFFFFF8800840E1D5)
Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
file path: C:\windows\system32\drivers\difmmdm.sys
product: USB Modem Device Driver (MSS Ver.3)
company: DEVGURU Co., LTD.(www.devguru.co.kr)
description: USB Modem Device Driver (MSS Ver.3)
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: difmmdm.sys (USB Modem Device Driver (MSS Ver.3), DEVGURU Co., LTD.(www.devguru.co.kr)).
Google query: DEVGURU Co., LTD.(www.devguru.co.kr) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Now I've checked the modem for updates through the Device Manager and it's listed as up to date. I tried downloading the the Sprint SmartView software again, just to be sure, which had no effect. Also Sprint and the website">manufacturer website don't list any driver downloads.

I'm still not sure what exactly is causing the problem, besides the driver info listed, or how to fix it.

Hi,

You can uninstall the USB root hubs and re-install the chipset drivers of your computer.

To uninstall USB Root Hubs:

  1. Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
  2. From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
  3. Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
  4. Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
  5. Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
  6. Restarted the computer
  7. Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer.
Once the computer restarts, you can update the chipset drivers of your computer from the link:
  1. Intel HM67 Express Chipset driver: http://dell.to/T4LYXk
  2. Intel Management Engine Interface: http://dell.to/QScQfX
  3. Realtek RTS5138 Card Reader: http://dell.to/SPrbwh
  4. Wistron USB3.0-Host Controller: http://dell.to/SPrqHP

Steps to download drivers:-

  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

You can also follow the steps below:

Try the USB modem on a different USB port and see if the same issue persists.
Try this USB modem with a different computer and see if it exibits the same behavior.
Uninstall the  Sprint SmartView software from control panel -- > Restart your computer -- > Re-install the application.

Please let me know the findings.
