USB To Connect To Digital Camera

Question

I have an Inspiron 2200 and have connected an Olympus digital camera via USB cable and installed the software that came with the camera.  I was able to download pictures from the camera just fine. The next time I tried to connect the camera via USB I get a message about new hardware; the computer identified the hardware correctly, but it keeps wants me to install the software from the CD.  Why do I have to do that again and will that have to be done every time I disconnect the camera and connect it again?  I thought USB connectivity was plug and play -- what's up with that?

You should not really need to install any software in order to retrieve the photos from your camera.
Normally, when you connect the camera to your laptop running XP then a dialogue but should appear asking you what you want to.

The only software that you may want to install is photo editing software.

I have been using this digital camera and a dell desktop system for a couple of years now and the way I download the photos is through the software 'Camedia Master'.  I've never downloaded them any other way and it has always worked fine, until I got the laptop and the usb cable doesn't stay plugged in all the time.
