These are the models of WLAN cards that where tested by Dell to work with the Inspiron 1750.

Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g half-height Mini-Card
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11a/g/n half-height Mini-Card
Dell Wireless 1515 802.11a/g/n half-height Mini-Card
Intel Wireless 5100n a/b/g/n half-height Mini-Card

Of the lot the Intel card gives you the widest range of network compatibility and for that reason I would suggest that card.

If you already have a wireless card in mind, just as long as it is the half height mini card form factor, in theory it should work as well.

Terry

Thank you for the advice. I will go for the Intel card.

I have BT infinity superfast broadband and want to make the most of it...

Can you tell me how much faster the wireless element of the intel card is when compared to my existing card. I am confused by the letters (a/b/g etc)

Thanks

Really before upgrading I suggest testing your existing wireless card and see if it does what you need it to do.  I suggested the Intel card simply because it had the widest range of networks and channels in one card.

A /B /G /N are the types of wireless networks that are available on the 802.11 (WIFI) family of wireless networking. A.and B networks are the earlier technology with G and finally N networks coming later.

Of the networks cards that shipped with your system, only the DW 1397 is not a wireless N card. All three of the remaining cards are both Wireless N and dual band cards, so they can connect to both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks and are 300 mbps cards. So as long as you currently have the DW 1505, DW 1515 and the Intel 5100n you should be fine. If you want the card that has the most options though, the Intel 5100n should be your choice.

So when working on a reply I don't always have the thread title showing. After posting my reply I noticed that you did mention that you are replacing the 1397. The DW 1505, 1515 and 5100n  are wireless N cards so they all will be considered upgrades.  If you are going to have to get new networking hardware with BT Infinity, there is a very good chance that the replacement router will be wireless N compatible so you should see a fair improvement with either of the three cards over the 1397.
