Upgrading Ram on INSPIRON 9400 Help

Hi, I have an Inspiron 9400 with 2GB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, T7200@ 2.00Ghz, Windows Vista Business @32Bit and 256 NVIDIA Graphics, My question is this;

I would like to upgrade my RAM to 4GB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (so 2x 2GB modules. instead of 2x1GB modules)
Is this possible on this laptop ? I have heard that it can't be upgraded above 2GB, is this true ? would appreciate any help.

Cheers
Dan.

Max is 2x1G or 2G total.

Thanks for that, I'll get in touch with Dell and see what they say and let you know.
Would just like some more ram for photo and video work.

Max for the 9400/E1705 is 4 GB. Check the Dell site. Crucial (and maybe others) lists max at 2 GB, but this is incorrect. You will only have access top around 3 GB with 32 bit systems because of use of 3-4 GB range by the OS.

Ok, I just heard back from Dell, this was there answer:

Dan,
The maximum that the machine can take would be a 2 x 1Gb of RAM.

My apologies for that!

Not very happy now ! :smileysad:

I just rechecked the E1705 manual on the Dell site, and lo-and-behold, the max memory has been changed from 4 GB to 2 GB! The manual that came installed on my 1705 says 4 GB with a 2 GB per slot max. Has anyone successfully installed 4 GB?

What would happen if I installed 4GB into this system ??? has anyone done this ? am very keen to try it. I have seen the new Inspiron that has taken over from the 9400 has the option for 4GB.

I have an Inspiron 9400 and I installed 4GB RAM with no problems at all - just had to confirm memory increase from setup - (only sees 3.3GB but still better than 2GB) - Modules are really cheap through crucial at the moment . . . (though their website states 2GB is max for 9400) . . .

at reboot, your system will halt when it finds the memory has changed. Enter set up and just confirm and OK . . . simple. I'm sure you can find 2GB modules at a good price if you shop around but I've always found Crucial brilliant / fast / with a no quibble returns policy. Someone on this forum recommended an alternative supplier but I went to the site and not only do they not do the 2GB modules, their site is very confusing compared to Crucial . . . (who also include idiot-proof / safety instructions with all modules sent out) . . . I ordered 2 x 2GB and received it next-day for around £150.00 - as I said you can shop around, up to you.

Thanks for the info, will go and get some memory from crucial then.  does it automatically see the new memory or do I have to run setup after it's installed. Have heard others running 4GB in the same system without a problem.

Hi Mike, thanks for that.  did you get the 2 of the 2GB SODIMM 200pin DDR2 PC2-5300 @667mhz ones( http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT25664AC667) ? my current memory is 2x1024 667Mhz type so that should be all ok shouldnt it ?

Thanks for the info and help with all this :smileyhappy:
