Upgrading Windows XP
I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop (2002) Core 2 Duo; 1.4 Ghz, 795 MHz, 1.99 GB RAM, Can the XP OS be upgraded to Windows 8.1 or is it's life over :-). (Non-tech savy Senior here.)

Thanks for the response. Help this Senior out here - do you mean by "clean install" I somehow wipe the hard drive clean or what?

Upgrade - no. Clean install should be possible, though.
You may now want to wait for Windows 10 -- which will be out shortly.

There was no Vostro in 2002. The first Vostro 1500 was released in mid 2007. But, yes you can run windows 8.1 on it. Note that if you upgrade to win 8.1 you'll be able to upgrade-it to windows 10 for free when it gets released.

When you boot with the windows 8.1 dvd, select advanced installation, format the windows xp partition and proceed to install.

For details on clean installation see here:

This system has a legacy BIOS (should be installed with the MBR partition scheme).
As mentioned Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 will both be obsolete in summer as the free upgrade from Windows 7/8.1 is out. You can install Windows 10 TP in the mean time:
