Using Asset.com more than once

Our company uses the Microsoft BDD system to image all of our computers. It reads the BIOS for the service tag to set up a computer name. Our problem is that some of the 131L laptops have had warranty work and we have gotten refurbished motherboards from Dell with a blank service tag in the BIOS. It appears that asset.com was used to blank this out by Dell, and everything I read here says asset.com can only be used once. We aren't able to update the service tag.

These laptops with blank service tags are useless to our imaging system. Is there a utility that can update the service tag field in the BIOS more than once?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try this:

ASSET /s new_service_tag Specify new service tag
ASSET /s /d Delete service tag

It is in the documentation for ASSET.

If that doesn't work, you will need a program called SVCTAG.exe
ftp://ftp1.us.dell.com/utility/svctag.exe

It might work.  If that doesn't work, you will need the full version of svctag.exe.

Thanks Bay. I am using the Dell BIOS Upgrade CD that came with the 131L motherboards. Running through the menus it appears to loop. It does say it is for the Inspiron 1501, but nothing ever gets done. Exiting out of the menu system, I run asset.com. It says "This machine does not support an asset/service tag". Okay, so now I'm confused. I run svctag.exe, and tell it "Y" that I want to change the service tag, and it comes back with "I told you what I am. But what are you?". EE-CPB.EXE: ERROR 0. Wow, what meaningful error messages I am getting.

How do I get the full version of svctag.exe?  My techs and I are stumped at this point.

Thanks,
Chris

Strange.  I have not seen that before but I do have the util that Bay mentioned above.  I just signed up today, so I'm not sure how I would send it to you.  I have them in an .zip file that contains both an .iso image and a self extracting to floppy image.

There is a Dell Tech only BootCD for changing SERVICE TAGS on Dell Laptops.

The ASSET TAG can be changed by the user using Asset.com OR the DCCU
