Using laptop as desktop

My office recently acquired new computers, and instead of a desktop, I now have a laptop (a Dell Latitude 3540). I like the added options I have with a laptop; however, most of the time, it will be sitting on my desk being used like a desktop. (It is also connected to an exterior monitor, keyboard, and mouse, just like a desktop.) So, my questions are these:

  • Can I leave it plugged in?
  • Can I leave it turned on? (If not, how often should it be shut down?)
  • If either of the previous answers is "yes", what should my power settings look like?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi AL-Ruth

The Latitude systems are a great alternative to desktop systems. In answer to your questions:

-Yes, the system can remain plugged in when not in use. The battery will not charge unless needed.

-Yes, but as with Desktop systems it’s recommend whenever the system is not in use it is powered off to save resources and allow the operating system to clear cache files and aid performance. You could also use hibernate and sleep settings, find more information about these settings here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions

-There are a few power options that you can change to suite the you prefer. Check out the Microsoft guide below for more information:

You might benefit from a docking port with your configuration? Depending on how many cables you would be using a dock could help your set up.
