Video Codecs

I reset my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop after it crashed three or so months ago now, and it will no longer play DVDs. The powerdvd program will not function at all sometimes even after reinstalling it, and with Windows Media Player, it says 'Codec Aquired' and then will only play the sound if anything?

Is it a codec? Help appreciated!!!

If you are running XP then download this http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

If you are running Vista download this http://www.free-codecs.com/download/vista_codec_package.htm

These are the pack that I use and have no problems at all.

I downloaded that package for XP and it allowed it to play one of the movies it would only play as audio (on hard-drive) but it still will not read DVD's.

After inserting the DVD, the laptop might become noisy, then just stop working and does not acknowledge that there is a disc in there at all.
