Video/graphic driver refuses to update! Windows Vista 64 bit.
Hello!
I recently installed a new laptop screen into my Dell Inspirion 1440 (the last one got cracked :emotion-7: ).
The installation was very easy and was a success.
HOWEVER, yesterday, I tried to hook my laptop up to an external monitor and was unable to do so. This is compounded with a lot of other things I've just noticed.
- I cannot connect to any external monitors.
- Aero Windows doesn't work. (If I try to use the "Bubbles" screensaver for instance, the computer says "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct 3D).
- None of the films I play on Netflix give me the "HD" option anymore. So, nothing is playing in HD.
- I am no longer able to play The Sims 3 (I get the error "Unable to start game. Device 0 cannot run this title . No supported video graphics card detected. Please check your system hardware.")
- When toggling between the different power settings, the screen never dims for the "power saver" and "balanced" settings.
I figured it was a driver problem. I've tried a billion times to update the driver. Here's how my device manager looks:
(for a while (during all the changes I've made today, it was saying "Video Controller (VGA compatible) "where it now says unknown device under display adapters." but when I discovered there was a problem with my laptop, it originally said "unknown device" like it does again now.)
I'm guessing that a generic driver.
When I tried to use Windows Update to update the driver, it fails and tells me "Windows Update error
80070103."
When I tried to update the driver through the chipset driver's installer program, it tells me "Error you must have administrator rights to complete this action" midway through the installation.
Even after I've tried right-clicking and running it as an administrator, it doesn't work (and I also believe, that I turned that UAC feature off months ago. So, i don't even understand why it's asking me that.)
I went to my computer, right clicked.. went to properties. And, "new hardware" was detected. It re-adjusted my windows rating score, giving the graphics and gaming gaphics scores a 1.0.
I believe my video/graphics card is "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family"
I don't know where to go from here. Please any suggestions?

It does sound like a video driver problem. There are two different drivers for your system.
The ATI driver may be found from this link.
The Intel GM45 driver from this link
You mentioned Intel Mobil Express Chipset family. That isn't a video adapter, but the chipset drivers for the system board. I suggest checking your system inventory to make sure what video adapter was included.

^ Thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the "Intel GM45 driver," but it doesn't seem to have made any changes in the way my computer is running. I also did a system inventory.
Here's the hardware section:

The system inventory won’t always give the type of video adapter, especially if the incorrect drivers are installed. I suggest going to the following link.
lt.dell.com/.../lt.aspx
Just type in the service tag on the blank field provided on the site. It should give a list of all the devices that shipped with the system from the factory. From there you should be able to verify what video adapter was included with your system.
If it does turn out that the integrated GM45 video adapter shipped with the system, you may wish to consider backing up your data to reinstall Windows. Just download the ATI card if that is the video adapter that shipped with the notebook.
Please let me know what you find out.

Thanks for replying.
This is what my original system configuration said (I couldn't decipher what exactly was my video adapter.)

I don’t see a discreet video card listed. If this is the entire inventory then you will need the Intel GM45 video adapter drivers installed. So assuming that the system board isn't defective I can only suggest reinstalling Windows on the system. It is quicker to run a PC restore, but you may need to perform a manual reinstall if PC restore is not available. You can find info on either on the following article.
