Vostro 1400 Windows 7 64-bit

Dell says the Vostro 1400 is not Windows 7 64-bit compatible, but I was able to get it working without too much trouble.

I installed a "fresh" version of Windows 7 64-bit, instead of upgrading from the stock Windows Vista 32-bit. My computer has the optional 128 MB nVidea GeForce 8400M GS Graphics Card. I have upgraded from 2GB of RAM to 4GB of RAM.

Installation of Windows 7 went without a hitch, and it took about 40 minutes. However, after installing the following did not work:

<>  Aero themes

<>  Sound

<>  Touchpad scrolling

I fixed these issues by installing new drivers:

<>  For the graphics card: http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/186.81/186.81_notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_international_whql.exe&lang=us&type=GeForce%20M

<>  For the sound:http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R171786&formatcnt=1&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=235779

<>  For the touchpad: http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&cs=&k=R192617&cat=all&x=0&y=0

It worked for me, but "your mileage may vary". Good luck!

The driver is R192617

I have the exact same computer, and have all working with Win 7  64 bit except the mouse pad scrolling. I can find the driver you are using? Can you help me more? The link does not seem to work.

Thanks

Rod

ok, thanks again. The mouse pad driver R192617 did the trick. All is working great with my  Vostro 1400 running windows 7 64 bit.

I created a folder with all drivers mentioned in this message thread. I then included a readme file I created with notepad. I put all drivers and the readme in the folder and then named the folder " Vostro drivers for win 7" . Then if I have to ever do a clean install of Win 7 i will have all the drivers ready to go again.  This is important since the Vostro 1400 is not supported by Dell to run 64 bit.

I'm glad that R192617 worked, and it worked for me, too.

I have archived the drivers much the way that you did, for the same reason.

I have noticed that the video performance is marginal. When I close or minimize a window it looks a little "jerky". How about you?

Did you have any problems installing the audio driver? I get an error when I run it: "ExitError:Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again." Any ideas what the problem could be?

Thanks!

In my case there was no trouble installing the driver that I referenced above.

However, I have now switched back to Windows 7 32-bit.

1)  Video performance on my machine was marginal with the Aero effects in Windows 7 64-bi. It is just fine in Windows 7 32-bit.

2)  I was worried about finding the right drivers some time in the future, since Dell does not support 64-bit on the Vostro 1400. I found that all of the Vista 32-bit drivers that Dell has for the Vostro 1400 worked perfectly for Windows 7 32-bit. That made me feel more confident about being able to find and install drivers some time in the future, if needed.

3)  Not one of the software titles I have is 64-bit, so there was no advantage to using Windows 7 64-bit.

Best wishes,

awesome post! very helpful, I've got the same computer, OS, and problems. another problem i am having is when i close the lid of my vostro 1400 and open it again, the screen will go black and the comp will not respond to any touches of the mouse, keyboard or even power button. The only way I have found fixing it is doing a hard shut down by pressing and holding the power button down. any ideas?

Mike,

I also had a smooth install and ran into the same issues with drivers. I had not worked out the touch pad. Thanks for that one. It worked for me.

The only thing for me is the card reader. It does not work at all. There is and unidentified "base system device" in device manager which I assume is it but I have not been able to find a driver for it.

Hi

I am also using a Dell Vostro 1400 with Win7 (64bit) and also having the same problem with the "Base System Device" driver. My card reader and the bluetooth are not working without the driver. Could not find any driver for it anywhere.

Any body have any solution?

THANKX!

To TheJacketL -

The only links that I have are included in my original post (09 Nov 2009) and in a follow up post (10 Nov 2009). The links may be hard to read, but look and copy and paste carefully, and you should be able to get them.

My Vostro 1400 doesn't have an Intel graphics card, so I don't have a link for an Intel graphics card in my posts.

Please also consider that I have switched to Windows 7 32-bit. All of the Dell drivers for Vista 32-bit work fine for Windows 7 32-bit, and they're easy to find through Dell. I was not happy with video performance under Windows 7 64-bit, and not one of my software titles was 64-bit, so there just was no reason for me to use Windows 7 64-bit.

Best wishes,

Mike Wilkinson

Anyone know how to make the sound indicator appear again when adjusting the volume using the button? It's gone.

Will it be ok if i I install win 7 64bit and that vostro 1400 doesn't support it? Does it matter?

I had same problem, so i grabbed driver from HP website. I have Windows 7 64 bit on Inspiron 1721.
