Vostro 3460 Boot up problems
I have a Dell Vostro 3460 running windows 8.1 pro which i bought May 2013. Recently I have been having problems with boot up. When I turn on, the on button lights up, the keyboard lights up and the three function buttons light up one at a time from left to right, then back down from right to left, after which they go off and the keyboard light goes off. The on button stays lit but nothing else. Throughout the whole process the screen stays black and nothing happens.
If i press the on button again the whole thing switches off. I have to keep trying and sometimes it will work after 3 or 4 attempts - and sometimes takes over 20! It does seem to be getting worse though and I'm worried it won't switch on at all soon.
I ran the diagnostic check from Dell support website and it said everything was running fine. Not sure what to do next if anyone can help please.

Hi jenaid8,
I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer and then run the hardware diagnostics again. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS required onto the system and install it.

Thank you for your answer. I downloaded appropriate file but when I tried to run, I got the message:
Error 216 - Failed to read BIOS from ROM! Status = 1604
I tried deleting the download and doing again but got the same result.

Hi jenaid8,
I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.
Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components.

Exact same problem here with a client, tried many things, removed the battery, replaced the battery, I have changed the power button circuit without solving the problem, I fear this is a motherboard issue.
If my message would wake this thread, please do no hesitate to communicate any solution. I'm looking to replace the motherboard but can't not sure to avoid the same problem within months or weeks.
Disappointing for a Vostro laptop.
