Wandering mouse cursor
Inspiron 8200 running Windows XP SP2
Soon after boot up, I found my mouse (touchpad and stick) wandering on its own steam,(with my finger off the touchpad) to the edge of the screen where it disappeared. I could not retrieve it using the touchpad, but heavy pressure on the stick managed to bring it back intor view on the screen. However, when I released the stick, the mouse cursor sprang back to the edge of the screen and disappeared. After several such retrieval attempts, the mouse finally remained on the screen. After some time, the mouse would repeat this disappearing act.
Actions taken:
Turned the computer off and on again to no avail.
Ran an updated version of Norton anti virus on the computer which showed no viruses.
I have an updated version of Zone Alarm on my laptop.
I deleted all the spyware detected by Webroot spy sweeper, but still no improvement.
I checked device manager which indicated no problem with the mouse.
After some time the mouse seemed to settle down without a problem, but I am afraid that this problem may recur.
I would appreciate any advice on what I should do. Should I re-install the mouse driver?
Incidentally this problem started after a defrag of the hard disk, although I'm not sure that this is the cause.
Thanks for any help

hi,
It sounds like you will need to replace the keyboard. If you dont use the stick you could disable it. It sounds like an int. hardware fault, not driver related. Look for posts about this fault in the I4000 /I4100 range. ( it was a common problem )

I am having the same "wandering mouse/touchpad" problem. I have an Inspiron 8200 w/ XP Home. I had installed SP2 but uninstalled it. I tried all the same things as Skanda including trying three different "mice".
When you say check posts I4000-I4200, what does that mean?

Hi,
I mentioned the other models because it was a common problem in them. What you may want to try is to take out the keyboard and use an external one. If the fault comes back when you replace it, it would be likely to be the keyboard. On this model, the touchpad can cause the problem so if the keyboard is not the cause, you can unplug the palm-rest. This will also disconnect the speakers and mem. battery, so when booting it will ask for the date and time to be entered. If you have a recent driver, you may be able to disable the pad / stick to find the cause. If you leave it disabled, the pointer will often be slow and unreponsive. With a bad pointer stick, often a tap on the top will make it go bad / or good, and when the pointer goes crazy it can still control it.

Thanks,
As of today my mouse (Kensington Wireless) is behaving. I ran a full restore from a set of backups I made before this problem started. I also added a USB 2.0 card (My laptop USB ports were not 2.0) and plugged my mouse receiver into that. It "wandered" when the Desktop was loading, but it has been fine for quite some time now. (Knock on wood!)
If it acts up again, I will try your suggestion.

I have the same problem with my Inspiron 8600 that I bought earlier this year.
It wanders to the top right of the screen, and if I accidentally touch the touchpad it will sense that as a click and annoyingly close whatever website I am browsing because it is hovering over the X.
This also happens when I either rest my fingers on the keys, without typing anything it will move around. Also typing will also move the cursor. I believe it is a fault with the thumbstick in the middle of my keyboard, which I cannot disable without disabling all other pointing devices.
I will go and remove my keyboard and clean it but im not sure if that will solve it since it seems to be a key problem.
I use an external mouse though, but even after unplugging it, the problem will still occur, moving around the thumbstick has no effect.
this problem seems to happen randomly and sometimes a few taps on the base of my laptop below the keyboard will sometimes stop the cursor from wandering.
It makes it very hard to do graphics work and draw when you have a wandering mouse. It also greatly affects my performance when performing operations on my laptop.
Other notes are that I have reinstalled windows XP with the supplied CD.
No Service Pack 2.
All drivers are installed, It worked fine after the installation, this problem just suddenly occured I don't know why.
