Windows 7 64-bit Diagnostics Custom Test for Hard Drive
Inspiron 1545 laptop with 64-bit Windows 7
I was getting the error "The Ac power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined." This error has been cleared up but it also gave the option to press F5 to run onboard diagnostics which gave the following error.
Error code: 2000-0146
error code: 0146
Msg: Error code: 2000-0146
Msg: Hard drive 0: Self test log contains previous errors
Per Kalyan S response at http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/t/19457874, this "refers to previous errors in the hard drive which might not really be a hardware failure". To confirm this, he recommends the custom test of the 32-bit Diagnostics menu. When I press F12 and boot Diagnostics, they immediately run and do not provide any of the menu options described at http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/52057/en?c=us&s=bsd&cs=04&l=en.
When I try to run DELLDIAG.exe from the Dell Resource CD, I get the following errror.
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) of the program and then contact the software publisher."
Is there a 64-bit compatible version of Diagnostics that can be downloaded which will allow me to run the custom test that Kalyan recommended?
Thank you,
David

Hi David,
I would suggest you to run a thorough test on the Hard drive. You can download Support assist from the link below and run the PC CHECKUP on hard drive and complete system to check for issues

Please let me know the findings.

Your hard drive has failed and its time to replace it, preferably with at least a 250 GB SSD:
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/inspiron-1545
In the meantime attempt data recovery from your old hard drive to an external hard drive using Fedora:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/data-recovery-using-fedora/
Once you have the SSD you will need to install it, see the service manual:
http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-1545_service%20manual_en-us.pdf
With the new SSD you will have to load Windows. Microsoft's representative Gabriel Abu has made it known that there will be no cutoff for Windows Insiders from reaching Windows 10 RTM. Therefore at this stage I recommend installing Windows 10 Insider Preview and using it to take the upgrade to Windows 10 RTM:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-10-technical-preview-iso/
Windows 10 RTM will be out on the 31st of July 2015.

Hello Ravi,
I performed the Short Hard Drive Test and the Full Hard Drive Test. The system passed both tests.
Regarding error message "Self test log contains previous errors", is it possible for me to view the self test log to see what the previous errors were? Also, I thought it may be worth checking that log file once a week to see if any additional errors are occurring.
Thank you,
David

Hi David,
This error indicates partially bad sectors in the Hard Disk. If the system is booting up please run the chkdsk /r to check if it fixes the hard drive.

There should be an entry in system setup (F2 at powerup) that lets you see the log.
Or, clear the log (unplug system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec). Then re-run the diagnostics and see what you get.

Hi Ravi, I ran the chkdsk /r. The log is below. It looks like chkdsk found/fixed no issues.
Is there any way to view the previous self test log errors? I would like see the message content and determine their frequency (recent, years ago, etc.) and monitor future occurrences. The system has passed all other tests at this point. If it were not for the power adaptor error that gave me the option of running diagnostics then I wouldn't have any indication that there is a potential hard drive issue.
Thank you,
David

Thank you for the reply but I don't see any such entry. My online searches don't yield any instructions about how to view the self test log. If anyone can state specifically how to find this info then please provide the details. This is for Windows 7 Home Premium. If it is confirmed that I cannot view this log then I guess there is nothing to lose in trying to clear the errors.
