scarman17,

This is my observation.

The Intel Adapters have issues with staying connected, since Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 came out. I have found that the older drivers you can find, the more stable the connection.

What I would try.

Make a system restore point.

Download these drivers and save them to your desktop.

These are the Windows 7 64-bit drivers Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Bluetooth Driver

These are the Oldest Windows 8 64-bit drivers

These are the Windows 8 64-bit drivers Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Bluetooth Driver

After you make the system restore point,

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time, device manager, network adapters, right click on Intel® Centrino Wireless-N 2230 WLAN/BT Half Mini-Card, left click uninstall. Tell it to remove the software and drivers.

Restart your computer. When you login, the new hardware wizard will try to install the drivers but fail.

I would first try installing the Windows 7 64-bit drivers in the Windows 7 Compatibility mode

If the drivers don't install, then try the Windows 8 drivers in the Windows 8 Compatibility mode

Thank you Rick.  This is very helpful.

We're having the same issue, as are very many people.  Check the intel forum for example.

Clearly the adapter should work with a current driver and operating system.  I don't understand why Intel doesn't issue a recall, or why Dell doesn't switch to an adapter that does not have these problems.

For anyone else with the issue, an alternative kludge is to turn off power management for the wireless adapter, which you can find under the device properties in Device Manager.

This isn't a real fix, of course, since wireless is a battery hog and power management is key to battery life.  But it should stop you from getting those disconnections while we wait for Intel and Dell to make us whole.

snowluth,

In addition to the things I'd try(listed above) I also do these tweaks on all the systems in my home...

Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your network adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.

Thanks Rick!  I appreciate the help!

None of this has helped my new Dell Alienware 18 laptop!  It has something to do with Dell's use of wifi parts they put in their products.  Not only is the laptop pulling this stuff so is the new Dell printer I got with the computer.  It kept going out and countless hours with Dell spt in Costa Rica, they kept taking the software off and put it back on...it would work a little bit and out it would go.  The ONLY way it would work is if you would hardwire the printer to a computer, notice I said a computer since the Dell Alienware is not working, had to plug it into my old computer.  I finally figured out the new laptop was pulling the same stuff going out from internet.  Have had nothing but heartache.  First laptop I received had sooooo many things wrong with it, turned it back in only to get another one with other problems but unless you say I want a refund within 30 days, sorry they keep your $4,000!!!  And no one knows how to fix the computer.  They want to strip it and set back to factory settings.  They have no idea how to fix it!  The Dell shows I have internet but no internet.  I have watched 5 hrs of youtubes on everyone's ideas to fix the problem but so far no luck.  Help, if you have this problem and it has been fixed!!!  I cannot afford to get another new computer!.  A Former Dell Fan

Hi Rick,

I have not had internet connection since I wrote this so I cannot post the info you want me to get to here. I can tell you the info has all yes's on the last 4 items about monitor, virtualiation, address translation and data execution.  I am noticing that it repeayts a couple times on Bluetooth Network Connection that "Media Disconnected", would that have anything to do with intermittent wi-fi?  I have Malwarebytes and unfortunately, I had Kaspersky but it ate it along with superantispyware when I was deleting bad things off of it so I do not have one presently.  I know that is not it cause this problem has been here since day 1 I got the laptop.  My Service Tag is  and Express Svc Tag is .  Some of the other lines are:

Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter

Connection Name:  Wif-Fi

DHCP Enabled:  Yes

DHCP Server:  192.168.1.1

IP address 192.168.1.7

fe80:b13b:3af2:9405:792

Then further down it has (skipping Ethernet info)

TAP-Win32 Adapter V9

The only thing I see is about the Bluetooth Media Disconnected, again, is that the problem?  Wifi signal shows 4 out of 5 bars on the bottom of the task bar.  Still no internet of any kind, it goes and comes when it wants to so still on the old computer to answer you.  Thanks, Rick, on anything you can do, this $4,000 computer is doing nothing for me.  I was able to get rid of the new Dell printer with the same problem to one of the office supply places, they were offering $50 off if you turned in your printer for a new one.  Set the new one up and is working perfectly.  It is the parts Dell is putting in their products is the issue, all my other devices have run perfectly before I got this Dell product and no intermittent wifi in the devices except the Dell products.  If I could turn the Dell laptop in and get a different Dell computer, do it in a heartbeat and see if I get the same problem.....I doubt if they let me do that either.  Thanks, Rick!

AFormerDellFan,

If you could run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here. It will put a file in notepad and you can find the file at

c:\

Put the file on a flash drive and then post the information back here.

I would really like to try and help you but the service tag you provided comes back to a Dell B1163/W Multifunction Mono Laser Printer, not an Alienware laptop. There are at least 3 models of Alienwares that are 18's and finding information can provide me with the details I need.

Was Kasperly fully removed and super antispyware?

Hi Rick,

I do not have a flash drive to use, I took a picture of the black box but you do not have an attachment slot so I can send to you so I am typing everything I see in the black box:

                     137:  KB2995004

Network Cards  4 NICs  Installed

                            01:  Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter

                                    Connection Name:  Wi-Fi

                                     DHCP Enabled:   Yes

                                      DHCP Server:  192.168.1.1

                                      IP addresses

                                       01:  192.168.1.7

                                       02:  fe80: b13b:3af2:9405:792

02:                  Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)

                                      Connection Name:  Bluetooth Network Connection

                                      Status:  Media Disconnected

03:                  Killer e2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS

6.30)

                                       Connection Name:  Ethernet

                                        Status:                     Hardware not present

                04:                  TAP-Win32   Adapter V9

                                        Connection Name:  Local Area Connection

                                        Status:                      Media disconnected

Hyper-U Requirements:    VM Monitor Mode Extensions:  Yes

                                            Virtualization Enabled in Firmware: Yes

                                             Second Level Address Translation:Yes

                                             Data Execution Prevention Available:Yes

C:\Users\Allyson

That is all that the black box says.   Kaspersky is on limited, antisuperspyware totally gone.  Sorry on the wrong numbers last time, grabbed my paper out of drawer & copied (really small lettering for old people!).  Svc Tag:<ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> Express Svc Code:  <ADMIN NOTE: Express service code removed per privacy policy    Again,  all signals show it is working but no internet, all my other devices including the old computer I am typing on all fine and working.  Is the wi-fi adapter defective?  Thank you, Rick, on whatever you think it is, soooo frustrating for a brand new computer not to work since I got it!!!!  Allyson

Alyson,

You have a valid IP Address.

Can you connect in the same room as the wireless router?

Places to look to see if your Connection is enabled

Look and make sure Airplane Mode is not turned on. Airplane Mode - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Look at Kaspersky Firewall Settings and make sure it is not blocking the connection. I would remove Kaspersky in the control panel, programs and features then restart the computer and see if you can connect.

Did this system come with Norton or MAfee?

Actually, the one answer that I did not notice in any of these postings was one that I found online. It's simply required turning on the transmitter using the function button and the F2 key for broadcasting items LOL

[View:www.eightforums.com/.../5355-airplane-mode-turn-off-windows-8-a-3.html]

Actually I had the same issue, the wind does version on the PC when I bought it at a store was seven, but the one shipping from Dell were 8.1. I brought my own desk in upgraded it after I got it, and had this exact same problem all that was required was turning onThe broadcasting device with the key combination
