XPS 13 mini Displayport

Hello,

I have a XPS 13 and I have been using no-brand mini displayport adaptors to connect to a VGA monitor.

The problem is that after a couple of hours of use, the screen begin to flicker, and then the adaptor does not work anymore. I kept replacing the adaptors, and have damaged 3 so far, all with the same behaviour of failing after some hours of use.

Is this port designed only for Dell's own mini displayport adaptors? If that were the case, why was this not made known to all? What's the difference between the Dell product and other off-the-shelf product?

Thanks!

Hello,

The mini-display port on the XPS 13 is an industry standard technology, it's not designed to solely work with any manufacturer or brand type.  Not sure why you're experiencing those difficulties unless it lies with the variances in refresh speeds, power usage, etc., for a VGA monitor.

Have you tried one of the Dell mini-display to VGA adapters?  Have you seen any difference?  I wouldn't think there would be.  Have all 3 been from the same manufacturer?  Maybe try a different brand and quality to see if another adapter lasts longer?  I know I've been using a mini-display adapter (to HDMI I think) for quite a while on my XPS 15 without a problem, and it's not a Dell brand.  I think it's actually a Best Buy house brand.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it.

All 3 adapters were from different sources. I have not tried the Dell adapter because of cost; so I want to be sure before I buy one, hence I asked the question.

What about the monitor toasting the adapter? Can hot-swapping damage the mini-display to VGA adapters? I read that the monitor should be off before attaching the adapter; but then again, don't people hot-swap projector between lap tops all the time?

Thanks!

VGA connections are not hot swap - and yes, the monitor could be the cause.
