XPS 15 (L521x) RAM upgrade?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to upgrade the RAM on this model? (XPS 15 L521x) What with it being a unibody etc.

If so, how easy is it?

Was hoping to upgrade from 8gb to 16gb.

Thanks

Hi,

I have researched and would like to inform that XPS 15 (L521x) supports memory up to 16 GB.

Memory on this computer is recommended to be replaced by a technician or at depot. Instructions on how to upgrade the memory are mentioned on the link given below:

Thanks & Regards

It's a bit of a task. I just completed the upgrade using Corsair Vengeance CMSX16GX3M2A1866C10 1866 DDR3 running at 1600. It cost more for the extra overkill butI like having extra margin and it works perfectly. If you were to tackle this task on your own, Follow the instructions in the XPS 15 L521x Owners Manual TO THE LETTER. Following the step by step instructions is a bit tedious because you have to disassemble, nearly, the entire machine to get to the second DIMM. But they will keep you out of trouble. Use a clean, static free workspace (lots of screws to lose). Make sure you wear a grounded wrist strap when handling the individual parts. Especially in a dry winter environment. Take your time. Don't force any connections apart. Take your time and disconnect them carefully and correctly. I did it on my lunch break thinking I only needed and hour. It took 2 hours. Make sure the ribbon connectors are all seated correctly or you'll be going back in. If you're going in....consider doing any other wish list upgrades while you're there. It's not something you'll want to ever do more than once.

Hey, waking up your old thread :) awaiting delivery of my L521x and was looking at the exact same memory. Have pulled many laptops apart being my job but little reluctant on my new machine unless I can collar one of our Dell Engineers to do it for me. Did you need to buy some more heatsink glue or did it go back on fine? Any other problems? RAM working fine after all this time? Thinking it will take me a good 2 very patient hours too, with lots of photos and remembering where screws go and studying the document... Thanks

I have had no problems at all with the RAM since installation. I have not had any hardware problems with the L521x at all. I did use fresh thermal compound on the heatsink since you have to break the original thermal bond to get things apart. I used some Shin-Etsu stuff use use at work. It's as good as it gets but probably not much better than some high quality stuff you can buy retail. You do pretty much have to disassemble the entire machine to get the second DIMM in place. Use proper grounding practices. Given what was at stake I took no chances. I even made sure the humidity in the room was > 40%. Take your time. The XPS 521x owners manual is very detailed and, if followed carefully, should result in a flawless install.
