XPS 17 - L701X Serial Number
I am trying to find the serial number of my new XPS 17 to help recovery if it is stolen.
I can't find that information on the computer or in the documentation that came with it. Does anyone know how to determine what the S/N is?

The service tag number (on the bottom of the system and in the BIOS setup, F2 at powerup) is the serial number. It's also on your invoice.

I notice that there is a paper label on the underside of the computer which gives a number for "Service Tag (S/N)," but this is easily removed. I am thinking that surely there must be some number engraved or pressed into the chassis that is not easily removed. I'm hoping that's the case, or I suppose I'll have to engrave something myself.
Anyone else have this issue?

There is nothing engraved in the chassis - the service tag is electronically embedded in the BIOS setup.
Given that the plastic assemblies are $30 parts, were the notebook to be stolen, replacing them is cheap for the thief, so engraving is not going to provide much in the way of added security.
