XPS L702X -- Plugged In, Not Charging

Folks,

Brand new 17.3" XPS L702X laptop and I'm already getting "plugged in, not charging" message with the battery charge indicator blinking between white and amber.  This is about the 3rd time that it happened to me and only when the battery is less than 10% capacity remaining.  Otherwise, works normally.

If I restart windows, I will get a message before initiating Windows to "...turn off computer until the battery cools or...F2 for setup or F3 to continue..."  Typically, the computer only has to be shut down for less than a minute before charging commences.

I called Dell Support and they were going to replace the motherboard and power connector without hesitation, but after I studied it more, the more I was convinced that it was a Windows 7 problem and not a motherboard problem.  Anyway, Technical Support came to the house and I had him do a complete and thorough diagnostic and all was normal.

Anyway, I'm thinking of calling technical support again and actually have them replace the motherboard this time, but before I did that, I wanted to contact this forum to determine if anybody else had this problem, if there was a fix for this problem, or if this is a design flaw with the motherboard.

Insight would be much appreciated...

KMN

I had the same issue a few times, but each time it happened I was playing Skyrim on the laptop using mains power and the charger cord fell out of the laptop so the laptop switched to battery without me noticing. Because I was playing a demanding graphical program the nVidia GPU was running hence the whole laptop was quite hot and I am convinced this is part of the cause for the battery overheating.

I have the same issue, not playing any overly demanding games, just general use. Watching video and internet. I can not get the light to stay off. If I leave it plugged in overnight is when it happens mostly. I have checked the battery when it happens, and it is no where near hot. I have a laptop cooler plugged in as well. Really at a loss on this one. Does Dell monitor these forums to see if they can help? I am under warranty, if that means anything.

Can you confirm you have the 150W power cord?  I have seen similar issues when using a 60W cord on a 90W system.  Most Dell latutude doc stations also require the 150W but the connections may not be the same, not sure.

Hello,

I also own the XPS L702x  i7-2630QM with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera, RAM: 6.144 MB 1.333 MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [1 x 2.048 + 1 x 4.096], Graphics: 3072MB NVIDIA GT555M GeForce®, 8x DVD+/- RW & Blu-ray Disc™ combo drive, Bluetooth and 9-cell battery.

Over the past few months the battery will refuse to charge after a certain point, currently 57% which has gradually dropped from about 90%. The battery indicator starts to flash orange,  message plugged in and not charging is shown in task bar  and if I restart the machine it says battery disabled and will remain so until temperature reduces.

I have removed the battery, updated and checked settings in BIOS, removed battery components from device manager but still have not resolved problem.

Is getting a new motherboard the only resolution? I think I might still have warranty but wanted to check here before calling the support line.

Many thanks.

I've got the same problem.

It seems Dell allegedly have a serious design flaw in the power supply unit yet expect their customers to pick up the bill of £60+ every 12-18 months.

Personally I find this unacceptable. This was my 1st Dell laptop and its likely to be my last after this issue. A pc should last 5-10 trouble free years, not need expensive components after just 12+ months and the worst thing is, you play £60+ for a new charger that then has the same plug fitting / silicon as the one that's allegedly failing and so 12+ months later, you need another one.

That's why I've made a plea to Dell here to fit Powercon connectors or if too large, get together with Powercon to design a laptop sized version. They also need a better quality 3 core cable by all accounts as it seems its only the smaller data link wire that frays.

My post about Powercon is here:

There's also a POLL on whether Dell should change to a better design.

Same thing happen to me.  I wonder if this happen to anyone who had their motherboard replaced and then after a while still have the same problem.  My L702X warranty has expired.  I just not sure to replace my motherboard or not if it is a hardware design flaw.  I like to hear from those who had their L702X replaced under warranty and if their problem never come back.

Thanks

Hi Folks,

Don't search any longer. I had the same message, tryed to update drivers, but they where all up to date. As my power cable felt apart just behind the computer connector, I asked for a new charger at Dell. The sent it under warranty and when I pluged it, the computer was charging correctly.

cheers,

Geekydell
