XPS M1530 - USB 2.0 not working

Got my system end of May, running Windows Vista, 2.0ghz T7250, 4gb ram, wireless USB, bluetooth, all the fixins... Anyways, my old external hard drive used to work via USB 2.0 just fine. I just got a new external hard drive last week and the first time I tried that, it worked fine as well. A week later (today), neither drive will connect at USB 2.0 speed. Both are connecting at slow speed and giving me that message "this device can perform faster" or something like that. I tried connecting both drives directly into each of the system's 3 USB ports, I even tried connecting them through my powered USB hub... and they still only worked at the slow speed... on that system. Of course, when I connect either one to my old Inspiron 8600, they both work fine at full, USB 2.0 speed. I can't figure out for the life of me what could be preventing them from working at full speed when they were just working at USB 2.0 last week.

My system has all the Windows updates and the only thing I really messed with on it in the past week is networking features since I just got a new Linksys router. I'm not sure how that could have cause the problem though... Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Check your device manager for USB Controllers. Look for USB2 controllers and check the properties to see if they are working correctly. Then check your Root Hub entires for the USB2 Root Hub and check their properties, reset the HUB in each Root Hub entry. See if they are showign high speed.

If this does not work, try deleting the drivers for USB and then reboot your computer and let Windows load the drivers.

Yea, apparently the driver for one of my two USB2 enhanced host controllers was missing. All once I realized that, all I had to do was update the driver and bingo. That's a really wierd thing that it would randomly do that, I wonder what causes it...

Anyways, thanks so much for you help, that relieves a lot of frustration!
