XPS M1530 dying inverter?

I am having a problem with the display on my XPS M1530; The screen is getting dimmer and dimmer, as if the backlight doesn't have enough power anymore. From what I have read on forums it seems like the inverter is beginning the reach the end of its life. And the warranty expired about two weeks ago.

Can I change the inverter (or the entire display) myself? If so, what parts do I need?

Before you start replacing parts, is there a good image on an external monitor?

Yes, there is a good image when I plug in an projector. The strange thing is that the screen brightness seems to vary a lot, and I can't really pinpoint exactly what causes the variations in brightness.
