Right click on desktop, choose Personalize, Display, projector. You can choose Extend, Duplicate or Projector only.

The projector has only one HDMI port , that is IN and it works prefectly well with my another laptop XPS M1330. I am an Indian and purchased the laptop in India and waiting for the response from Dell Support team here. As there is no response yet even after 24 hours, just entered into the community. Thanks.

Sorry you need to contact Dell Support or wait for another user to answer here in the forum. Make sure you are not using an adapter or converter on the connection. Can you get help from the projector's web site? Are you sure the HDMI port on the projector is an input and not an output? Read THIS.

Thank you. That is exactly the problem. When I choose "projector," the display would occur on projector alone and is fine but when I choose "duplicate" (which is the requred mode for presentations), I don't get display on laptop. It shows simply the "desktop theme wallpaper" with no icons or activity. If I choose "extend", the projector shows the "desktop theme wallpaper" with no icons or activity. I want duplicate display on both projector and laptop. I feel there is something wrong with XPS15 and HDMI combination

O.K. I feel my problem matches with the discussion I come across now on net. See the link.

This is quite complicated. An explanation of of why this occurs is this:
The Intel HD display adapter confuses the DisplayPort for the HDMI because DP has HDMI capabilities.
So when selecting the "Duplicate" function from FN+F1, or from the Screen Resolution window, it recognizes the DP adapter, which most likely isn't even in use, and a VGA display, and sets up a Cloned display at 800x600.
In order to clone your display through the actual HDMI port on your XPS 15z, you need to do so through the NVIDIA Control Panel.
First set your computer to "Disconnect projector" or leave it set at "Computer only" via the FN+F1, or through the screen resolution window.
Second goto the NVIDIA Control Panel via right clicking on your desktop, or searching for it in the Start Menu.
Third goto Set up multiple displays, from there check off the displays that you want activated and controlled by the GPU. Press Apply. It may take up to 10 seconds to apply, select Yes at the prompt.
Now select the default display, (usually number 1), right click it, and select Duplicate with 2 (use 1 as source). Press Apply.
It may take up to 10 seconds to apply, select Yes at the prompt.
Your display should now be cloned.
This may or may not have to be done each and every time you start your computer depending on your specific drivers and settings.
The FN+F1 function will still function and work with "Extend" and "Projector only" but the "Duplicate" will not work, and can only be configured through the NVIDIA Control Panel. "Extend" and "Projector only" work because the Intel HD Graphics supports HDMI. But it get's confused with Clone because of the DisplayPort.
This can often be permanently solved by adding a DP device and removing it, but that may cost upwards of 400 dollars for a DP monitor.

At first my xps15 automatically duplicated the screen via the HDMI port, but somehow I managed to stop that from working. It does indeed work via the NVIDIA control panel, but switches back to extended desktop as soon as I close and open my laptop, or reconnect the HDMI device.
So what you're saying is that it would be working permanently by just plugging in a DP monitor once, and then disconnect the plug?

I have strongly suspected there is a conflict between HDMI and DP - is there a way to disable either one? I rarely find anyone has HDMI cables for monitors, but everyone has VGA. I just want a reliable VGA output for my work - which consists of walking into any company and doing a presentation on their display equipment.

Ramareddy....
I know it was a few years ago....but did you every get an answer to your problem with the lapop/projector not working in "duplicate" mode?
My Dell has been working fine with my Epson projector - until yesterday....and on Duplicate... i get my laptop wallpaper only - no icons.... but projector shows my full desktop.
Any insights?
