Hello jonsal.

I had the same exact problem with my Inspiron 7720.

After extensive research, I managed to fix it.

Here's what I did...

-Power ON the computer.

- After the Dell logo, when the screen goes black, Power OFF.

-Then, Power ON again and Press F2 to get into the BIOS.

-When you are in the Bios, Go to the "BOOT" menu.

-Then go to "SECURE BOOT" and select "DISABLED"

-Then go to "ADD BOOT OPTION" and press "Enter"

- In the new window that opens up, go to "BOOT OPTION NAME", and type  "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" without the quotes.

- Tab down to "YES" and Press Enter

- Now, you should see "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" in the list under "BOOT PRIORITY ORDER and UEFI BOOT.

- Press the "+" key to move "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" to the top of the boot list.

-Press F10 to Save Changes and Exit.

Your computer should now boot normally from now on.

It worked for me.

Good luck.

Hi jonsal,

This issue could occur due to incompatible or outdated drivers. I suggest you to update the BIOS and Video drivers by downloading them from the following links and check if it fixes the issue.

BIOS: http://dell.to/SLBmCJ

Video: http://dell.to/VPeI7U

I’d also suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).
3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press to begin the PSA.
4. Write down any error codes listed. Reply to us with the error codes or let us know about the test results..

Thank you for the help! I have been worried something was terribly wrong. I also don't work on computers so i feel pretty good right now. Appreciate your hard work figuring this out.
