The Core Duo is a 32-bit CPU. The Core 2 Duo (and AMD Athlon X2) has 64-bit extensions. The Intel Core2 is about 10% faster than a Core Duo at the same speed.

You'll find the Intels beat the AMDs at many tasks, but both are more than capable of running everything out there right now.

If you go with Intel (suggested) try, if Dad can afford it, to get the latest and greatest platform(chipset)technology (ie Santa Rosa, aka Centrino Duo v2) . I'm almost positive Dell's Inspiron 1720 has it although you may not want a 17" laptop.
