difference between xps and inspiron laptops

I need to purchase a laptop for college next year and I was wondering if there was a major difference between the two types.

It depends on the model.  The only Inspiron left that's not a low-end budget model is the 1720.  All the others have gone to low-end integrated video and in general, left out the high-end options.

I have an XPS 1530 (bought it last month) and my mother just got a Inspiron 1525 - to tell you the truth I don't see much difference.  My monitor is better and my speakers are better - but overall I don't notice much difference.  I am just an "average user" (and no gaming) so I guess it depends on what you are going to be using if for.  I paid about $1,700 for the XPS and the Inspiron was about $700... so the price difference is clearly HUGE.

Depending on how it's configured the price difference shouldn't be THAT big.  And yeah, the XPS 1525 is worthless for games or anything that requires the GPU (IMO Intel's video barely handles the Windows Desktop).
