Try checking to see whether you still have the following file:

C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe

You can get a check of EvtEng.exe here .

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the registry boosterplc double clicked on it and it would not run--no error message; no indication that it was scanning the computer.

My Inspiron 1520 has the process EvtEng.exe running. Its description is Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Event Log. Mine is version 11.1.1.1

Could you start Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and press the button Show processes from all users to see if EvtEng.exe is running.

EvtEng should Auto Start. To see whether it can be forced to start try the following:

Click on Start and type command in the search box at the bottom of the panel. Right click on the Command Prompt link at the top of the panel and choose Run as administrator.

At the command prompt type sc start EvtEng and press Enter.

If the resulting message looks encouraging check Task Manager (Press Show processes from all users) to verify that it is running.

Sorry my previous posting assumed (wrongly I think) that your OS is Windows Vista. Therefore the procedure may not be very relevant.

Please confirm that the driver that you have just installed for your wireless card is for Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, release date 5/3/2007, version 11.1.0.0 (TIC135897).

Did you have any specific reason for updating the driver? If not have you considered rolling back to the previous driver to see if that solves the problem?

You are right. I have Windows xp home edition. I did not try the command start. Let me know if I should try that on xp. I downloaded a driver update from Dell from 4/11/08 for a 32bit operating system but I have not installed it as of yet because my driver seems to be working fine, though when I try to open it from my program menu it does not open and states that driver is not supported. Again, the computer seems to working fine. The only reason I suspect there is a problem is that I consistently get Service Control Manager errors on the error log.

1. When did you start getting the Service Control Manager errors?

2. So when your original posting stated you had updated the driver this was not really correct?

3. The latest driver approved by Dell for the Inspiron 6000 has the details given in my previous posting. Using any other driver would be unwise.

The Service Control Manager EvtEng errors only happen in the background on startup and go back to early June in the Event log.

Let's separate the issues:

Is there anyway to start the Evt.Eng so that the error messages stop? Since this is an ongoing problem that I am only aware of because I looked at the event log, how important is it to find a fix?

Finally, I thought that updating the driver could help and I found a later version of the driver on the Dell dowload site. Below is a description of the driver? Reading their release notes, there are many known issues if I am Operating in 802.11n Mode. Where did you find the driver referenced in your post?

My driver is operating fine and I hesitate to install a new driver. What do you think?

The driver I downloaded but did not install yet is:

Intel®Pro/Wireles Drivers-Only for WindowsXP/2000 (7245kb)

11.5.1.15/9.04.394/11/2008 Download Microsoft Windows XP/2000 Drivers for Intel® Wireless Wifi ling 4965AGN and Intel® Pro/Wireless Network Connections

I found the driver on the Dell web site here . As you will see it is a 78MB download. Can't guarantee it will fix your error but I would try it if I were you. In the worst case you can always roll back to your current driver.

Installed the new driver; restarted and there were NO SERVICE CONTROL MANAGER ERRORS!!!!!!  One more thing--should I let Windows managee the wireless adapter or should I use the wireless to manage wifi?

Anyway thanks for your patience and thanks for all your help.

Glad to hear that the error is fixed.

To determine the management question:

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections

2. Right click the Wireless Network Connection icon, and then click View Available Wireless Networks

If the Choose a wireless network window states Windows cannot configure this connection, the wireless network card’s client utility is managing the wireless network card.

If the Choose a wireless network window states Click an item in the list below to connect to a wireless network in range or get more information, the Windows XP operating system is managing the wireless network card.

I understand I have a choice. Which do you think is better--to let windows manage the wifi through its wireless zero configuration or let the new Intel Proset wireless adapter manage the wifi?
