Greetings,
My guess is you purchased a 9 cell (extended life) battery and previously had a 6 cell battery. If so, there is no way to remove that piece.
The good news is that the battery you got will have alonger life than the one you are replacing.

No, it's not a black palm rest area. The battery is installed in the back of the laptop, so the extra piece sticks out of the back and is the same color as the battery (silver).

Yes, you are right. (I didn't realize it was a different size and that it would extend beyond the profile of the laptop.)
