how to lock laptop

when i first got my laptop, after i would leave it for a while, the screen saver would appear and when i wanted to return, i would have to type in my password in order to unlock the computer. now the screen saver does not even appear. how do i get it back to where my computer locks automatically when i leave for a certain period of time?

Right click on the Desktop and choose Screensaver and then check off 'On resume password protect'.
