keyboard and touchpad not working :/

To start off, i have a dell xps m1530. i just recently (a week ago) installed windows 8 on it and it was working perfectly fine until about a day ago. My touchpad suddenly started typing symbols when i moved my finger around on it and then all together it just quit working including the buttons. i later discovered that if i were to press the caps lock key my whole keyboard would quit working until i restarted my computer. ive tried reinstalling all different kinds of alps drivers for my touchpad including the one i had before the windows 8 switch, which was supposedly compatible with windows 8, and still have got nothing to work or change. under the device manager my touchpad still shows up but has a "code 24" under the description of it which means something isnt working properly, not plugged in or the drivers are nonexistant. i am so lost now and dont know how to get my touchpad working again or why my keyboard quits working when i hit caps lock (which doesnt actually turn on the caps lock anymore).

Hi atomo,

Please check keyboard functionality in Command prompt. For that restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F8 key every two seconds. In the ‘Advanced Boot Option’ window using down or up arrow key highlight ‘Repair your Computer’ and hit enter. Select the keyboard layout and click on ‘Next’. On the ‘System recovery Option’ menu click on ‘Command prompt’ to open it. Use your keyboard in this window to check if it works fine. In case the keyboard works fine, the issue is with the Operating system.

XPS M1530 was not tested with Windows 8, hence drivers are not available. This could be one of the reasons for the touchpad not to work.

This Error code 24 means the device is not present or is not working properly and does not have all its drivers installed.

However you may try installing the Windows Vista touch pad driver available in the compatibility mode. Please click on the link below for the same:

Download the R286709.exe from the link above and double click on the file and extract it on the desktop in a folder. Look for setup file in the extracted folder. Right click ‘.exe’ file and click ‘Properties’. Click “install in compatibility mode’. Click on Application and select ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’. Next, click on ‘Troubleshoot Program’. Click on Program worked in earlier versions of Windows. Click on ‘Windows 7 ’. Click on ‘Start the Program’. Do not hit ‘Next’ until the installation completes. Once the installation completes, click on ‘Next’.

This may or may not work.
