I would suggest you to Remove the Battery & disconnect the AC Adapter from the system and hold the power button down for 20 seconds, to discharge “Static Flea Power”, after that connect AC Adaptor and battery and restart your machine.
Also, I would suggest to provide the status of the Keyboard Status LEDs (see the pic below)
I did your suggested procedure and there was no change.
The numlock (far left) light was on for the first 30 seconds or so after I pushed the power button then went out before the rest of the lights and sounds went out/off.
Tried turning on the computer again with different results - this time the computer stayed on - none of the keyboard status LEDs were on. The monitor stayed dark. The bottom of the computer around the docking connector became very hot after several minutes so I held down the power button till the computer turned off.
What would be the next step in the troubleshooting process?
To troubleshoot a problem with your computer, read the sequence of the keyboard status lights in order from left to right (Num Lock, Caps Lock, and then Scroll Lock). If the computer malfunctions the individual lights display a status of either On , Off , or Flashing .
It seems like an issue with the motherboard of the system; however, I would suggest you to reseat the memory sticks and then try to turn on. Please follow the below mentioned steps:
Turn off the system and any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system and any attached peripherals from AC power.
Use a wrist grounding strap and mat when working inside any computer system to avoid electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage
Remove the battery and memory door.
After that insert memory stick1 with module 1 and turn it on, if system turns on that means both memory stick and slot are good. Follow the same procedure with the other stick as well
I would also suggest you connect memory stick 1 with slot 2 as well.
I was able to reseat the memory sticks - and swapped memory sticks as well. The system is still the same:
Push the power button - the num lock light is on the others are off, There are sounds from the computer as if it is starting up - nothing on the screen - but after about a minute there is a flash on the screen and everything goes off.

The light pattern does not fit any of the shown above. The Num Lock is on, the others are off.
Thanks again!
