latitude e6400 battery life

I have a dell latitude e6400 (purchased new in 2009) and the battery barely lasts over an hour anymore when it is not connected to the charger.  I heard that there is a way to do an internal refresh or update for laptop batteries that can extend the battery life.  Is this true? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Three years on a battery is good. What you are talking about is discharging the battery till the laptop shuts down; the charge level that this happens can be adjusted in the power settings. I wouldn't go below 5%. This will supposedly recalibrate the battery to give a more accurate capacity reading. I have found this to do not much except REDUCE the actual capacity. Others also get this result. Each time you have a total discharge, the battery dies a little more.

Best life is obtained by not going below 25-35% capacity. The lithium batteries used in electric cars are set to not go below 35-59% charge to allow for a 100,000 warranty.

To monitor battery condition, download BattStat. This free utility shows mucho batter usage info.

If you want to get a new battery, try eBay. Prices are low, and some give a three year warranty.

Bay Wolf:

Seems that I did answer the question. I stated that "recalibration" of the battery doesn't work in most cases.

And your point is?  Did you not read my post?

I never said that you didn't answer the question.  I said that my post didn't answer the question but it was some good information.
