lcd or flex cable?

Question

Hi, I am trying to figure out if the problem with my dell inspiron 4000 is with the lcd or somet other part of the video system (the flex cable most likley). When powering on the screen is either scrambled with vertical lines, squashed, etc. or it comes up and then freezes and fades out to a solid color. If the system is plugged into an external monitor it works fine. Everyone once in a while it will work ok. It really seems to be some sort of loose cable and not the full LCD. Any advice? Does anyone know how to order a new flex cable or other needed part. Any help is very appreciated! Thanks!

Hi,

If it is your flex cable, it would describe the type of things you are seeing happen...

Just the fact you can plug in an external monitor, tells you that the Video card is fine..

do you think that if the lcd was bad it would always be bad? everyonce in a while it works perfectly.

i'm trying to figure my odds of a serious problem (lcd) versus easy problem (flex cable). i may ship it back to dell (out of warrenty repair) and don't want to be surprised by a bill for a new lcd.

dell should tell you what's wrong before they fix/bill you ...  whether you trust them is of course up to you though
