Evidently the new mobo has a password protecting it - if it was replaced by Dell, call and prove ownership and they will give you a master password.  If not a Dell repair, try and get the person who sold it to you to trade it for one not password protected.

all the passwords are disabled.  i ran across this once before when my computer was still under warrenty, that they replaced the mobo, and the service tag said "field".  i called the tech who replaced the mobo, and he gave me the disk with the service tag utility on it.  this utility could change the tag as many times as i wanted to.  unfortunatly, i lost that disk.  that is what i'm looking for.

i think you can call dell tech support for that and they will give you a way to change the asset tag.

been there, done that...  it took me 20 minutes to explain to the girl that i needed the software that is sent with the new mobo's instead of the asset tag program.  come on guys, out of everyone that has an inspiron, and has had a new mobo under warrenty, does no one have this disk?!?!?!?!?!?!?

go here:

http://support.dell.com/filelib/download.aspx?FileID=37105&releaseid=r33634

asset /s /d - will delete the existing service tag

asset /s XXXXXX - replace the XXXXXX's with your new Service Tag

If this doesn't work, I seem to remember having to use a different program to remove the existing service tag one time.

I have been trying asset.exe but this program won't allow you to change the service tag number but just to install it once . I cannot find any other program able to change it .

asset /s /d    cannot delete system tag

Considering the power of the file to delete an asset tag, which is there as an added protection against theft, and Dell not wanting this program to be widely distributed, it is no wonder that it is not being offered here or from Dell.
