:^/ It would help if we knew which model laptop you're thinking of. On my XPS M1210, the num lock function is activated by holding down the fn key and tapping f4. It can vary from one model to the next, but the markings on your laptop's keyboard should guide you.
fn+f4 doesn't seem to do anything.. and if i use the on screen keyboard to lock it, no light comes on so i have no idea what key it would be on the actual keyboard ):

You can try...
Hit the Windows Key, then type osk and hit enter. Lock it using the On Screen Keyboard.

dell studio xps 13.
