retested with ms office cd rom in the drive . . .
passed the test !!!

seems to be working, thanks for your input - yes i've run the diagnostics . . .

I think we are there - but I had some memory and hdd issues earlier that burned about 5 weeks of time . . .
so, i'm a little paranoid about other things going wrong with it . . .
