problem with Inspiron 5100 cooling fan.......

Hello all....

I purchased a laptop (Inspiron 5100) just over 2 1/2 years ago and it has been one of the most reliant computers I have owned yet. However, in the last week, the computer systematically turns off when it gets too hot. As of right now my laptop will last around 25 minutes if I do not have too many things going on at once, but it will turn off shortly after the fan kicks in. I tried compressed air to remove possible dust build up (referred to by a friend) and that extended the life to around 45 minutes, but I am desparately looking for any help in order to solve this problem! I am a full-time student that requires frequent use of my PC and am really looking for a solution. Thanks!

you can manually clean the heatsink or replace it yourself.  if you are under warranty have dell replace it.  otherwise, try opening up your computer and cleaning it.  if that doesn't help, buy a replacement from a place like www.parts-people.com and install it with some good thermal grease like AS5.

do not physically remove the cooling assembly unless you have a replacement or new grease around...
