problem with dell vostro 3450 input (mouse, touchpad and keyboard)

i have problem which happen intermittently and steady only on two application that is chrome and firefox. the problem does not happen in win 7 and other applications

at first i suspect the problem is the touchpad (synaptic). it happens when i was scrolling a lengthy website and all of sudden it freeze and i cant scroll or click and the keyboard happens to freeze too. the problem was first observe in firefox 13. and the problem has steady ever since that it force me to uninstall it.

next come chrome. the problem occurs too but not as bad as firefox. as mention earlier it only occur in firefox and chrome exclusively. it just freeze, i cant type, i cant scroll with touchpad or mouse both the same.

i tried several method to troubleshoot, by disabling the touchpad and enabling it back again, by reinstall the dell touchpad driver, by uninstall the dell driver and install synaptics driver, by going through regedit (use scroll cursor), by disabling all plugin in firefox and chrome, every possible method i found on internet. but still the problem persist and it even worse.

does anyone face similar problem? any vostro 3450 owner please share. i seriously hope this is not hardware problem as i dont want to replace my new hardware with refurbished one.

Since you have verified that it works on Firefox and Chrome, have you tested other browsers to see if this is just a problem with those two specific browsers?   Test with IE and see if the problem continues.  My next thought is test with a word processor on a lengthy document and see if it is an issue with browsers at all but more of an issue where you have to do a lot of scrolling.

I can think of a couple possible issues, if does only happen in browsers, I would suggest disabling browser add ons and see if that helps.  It is unlikely but I would look at bandwidth problems as well, test the system on other networks and see if the same problems occur.

I certainly suggest clean boot troubleshooting to see if it is a software issue.  First start the system in safemode with networking.  Start the system tapping F8 and choose safemode with networking, log on into windows and browse the web, check to see if you continue to have the scrolling problem.  If you don't have the problem in safemode with networking, open msconfig, just click start, search and type in msconfig and press enter.  Choose the services tab and check hide all Microsoft Services, and then click Disable All. Click the startup tab and click disable all, click OK and allow the system to restart.  Test the system after rebooting and see if you still have the same problems.  If you don't have the problem while in normal mode after rebooting then you know that you have some type of software causing problems while browsing. You can use msconfig and process of elimination to try to find the offending programs. For more on clean boot troubleshooting please take a look at the following link.  Please remember after testing return to msconfig and change it to normal boot.

You have already tried reinstalling the touchpad drivers; the only other thing that I can think of is reinstalling the video driver.  You can find the latest Dell video driver for your system at the following link.

I hope that this helps

Thanks for the update.  You should be able to have either browser configured to run at high performance.  I would check to make sure that I have the most up to date video drivers and if not, check if updating the drivers helped.

okay i found what the problem is. it is with the ATI switchable graphics, which i did put both firefox and chrome to high performance instead of power saving. i switch both to power saving and now the problem disappear, or at least i cant replicate it anymore.

ok i did tried to uninstall and install a new up to date driver (according to dell website, since i download it from there) and i able to replicate the problem, i switch to high performance for firefox (through switchable graphics) and the cursor and keyboard start behaving strangely as before.

i guess there are bugs that dell/ati/amd need to look at or perhaps you can tryout with the same system that is dell vostro 3450, and see if you able to replicate the same problem

Its a strange problem, but you don't notice the issue with IE or other browsers and only if you have them configured for high performance.   Please reply back with the BIOS and video driver revision that you are using.
