In order to use more than that much RAM, you must have a 64-bit operating system. While there was a 64-bit version of XP, it wasn't widely distributed and driver support for it is very poor - you likely have 32-bit Windows.
Upgrade the system to 64-bit Windows 7 Pro and run XP mode if you must use XP -- it will make a world of difference.

The Precison M4600 comes with 4 dimm slots to hold up to 16 gig Ram
XP is not listed as the standard OS.
