text on desktop blurry, shadowed. Graphics distorted
I accidentally made a wrong adjustment to the display settings somewhere. Now the text is blurry, with an unwanted grey shadow, and the graphics are distorted. Circles, eg the clockface on wesktop, are now ellipses, and photograp[hs are distorted.

I haven't set up a system restore to date, therefore I have no date to restore to.
As for uninstalling and re-installing the graphics driver, is that complicated for someone (me) who is not particularly computer literate?

Not at all, simply go to support.dell.com, click on the drivers download section, download the latest drivers for your graphics card/laptop, and install them. To find out what graphics card you have/uninstall:
Start -> Right Click "Computer" -> Properties -> To the left of this window, click on "Device Manager" -> Go down to "Display Adapters" (I think, can't remember off the top of my head), click the + to the left and it'll tell you (E.g Nvidia 8700M).
From here just right click and go to properties then uninstall drivers. If you have any problems uninstalling/installing drivers, I recommend doing it in safe mode (If you can do it all in safe mode, makes life much easier!)

Dear KirkD,
I went to the control panel, and then to NVIDIA, and, as you predicted, the resolution had been lowered from the manufacturer's maximum (recommended) level. I reset to the recommended level and all distortion immediately disappeared. Thank you; I do appreciate your advice.
As a point of interest, in the previous resolution level the circles were flattened. When I tried, this morning, using different levels below that recommended this resulted in circles squashed at the sides and elongated from top to bottom. What was it, do you think, that made the circles flattened?
Cheers,

Flattening means the display width was wider than it should have been. You could get either distortion depending on what resolution was running.
There is also an option in the Nvidia Control Panel to select one of several types of scaling to use if the resolution is not proportional the the native resolution of the monitor. You could play around with this also.
