I have found that the following Microsoft document has been of great help with resolving Windows update problems. Try the fixit tool and see if it can't correct the problem. If you continue to have problems please reply with the version of Windows installed.
Just click on this link it will take you to the document that I mentioned on my first post and you can find the Fix it tools there. Please give them and try and then report back here if they helped.
