windows 8 wifi keeps disconnecting from internet but stays connected to router

Hi

 

system = Latitude E6330, windows 8 pro, 8GB RAM,

 

system will maintain a wifi link to the internet for a few minutes then drop the internet connection but still remain connected to router.

 

have changed advanced adapter settings so that power saving does not stop the wifi adapter. But the problem still persists.

 

any help and guidance would be welcome.

Hi rich,

You may remove all the current wireless profiles and create a fresh wireless profile for your network and then try to connect to the wireless. Please paste the screenshot of ‘Device Manger’ with ‘Network Adapters’ expended. You may follow the steps below:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’
  • Click > sign next to ‘Network Adapters’

thanks for the response. Had to repost this as it failed (due to adapter disconnecting mid way through composition)

 

system now lasts approx. 2 mins before disconnecting. other system vostro 1510 win 7 on same network NOT exhibiting same problem.

The issue is firmware in routers.

You can turn of the Power saving features and use CAM mode.

Intel® Centrino® Wi-Fi Products Power save polling (PSP) causes connection issues with access points.

Symptom(s):

The following symptoms can happen if a Wi-Fi access point (AP) or broadband Wi-Fi router does not support the power save polling (PSP) feature:

  • Intermittent loss of Wi-Fi connection
  • Inability to initiate a Wi-Fi connection
  • Poor Wi-Fi connection data performance

Using battery power can cause these symptoms to be noticeable.

Cause:
PSP mode is a feature that provides extended battery life for laptop computers. The mode requires coordination between the AP or router and the Wi-Fi adapter. Intel has discovered that some APs or routers may not implement the feature correctly or completely.

Solution:

Contact the AP or router vendor for updated software or firmware to correct the problem.

Alternate Solution:
An optional workaround is to manually put the Wi-Fi adapter into continuously aware mode (CAM). This disables the PSP feature. Set CAM by using one of the following methods:

  • Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility
  • Network control panel applet (NCPA)
Note Using this workaround can cause your Bluetooth® device to not receive signals. Contact your computer manufacturer for more information.

Set CAM using Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility

From the Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility:

  1. Click Advanced > Adapter Settings > Advanced tab.
  2. Windows XP*: Select Power Management, uncheck Default / Auto, and move the slider to Highest / Maximum Performance.
  3. Windows 7 or 8*: Select Transmit Power, change Value to 5. Highest.
Note If the slider is already at Highest / Maximum Performance, move the slider to another setting and then back to Highest / Maximum Performance.

Set CAM using network control panel applet (NCPA)

Put the wireless adapter into continuously aware mode using the following steps:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network Connections.
  3. Right-click the wireless connection and click Properties.
  4. Click Configure.
  5. Click the Advanced tab.
  6. Windows XP: Select the Power Management setting, uncheck Default / Auto, and move the slider to Highest / Maximum Performance.
  7. Windows 7 or 8: Select Transmit Power, change Value to 5. Highest.
Note If the slider is already at Highest / Maximum Performance, move the slider to another setting and then back to Highest / Maximum Performance.

You may uninstall and reinstall the wireless drivers. Please follow the steps below:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen.
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’.
  • Click > sign next to ‘Network adapters’.
  • Right click on wireless card option and click ‘Uninstall’.
  • You may download and install the latest drivers from the link: http://dell.to/12rQlSh.

Yuu may also install the driver for the device listed under other devices. Please refer to the link: http://dell.to/17Z7xVp.

Hey Rich,

I've had the same issues and came here looking for an answer. I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 8. I adapted the info from SpeedStep's reply for my computer. Here's what I did.

Open up control panel, then click on-network and internet-view active networks-connections

When you click on Connections it will open up your Wi-Fi status. Under Activity click Properties and choose the Networking tab. Click Configure and choose the Power Management tab. Uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box. Click OK.

You should try upgrading your firmware on your router or have your internet service provider do this if they provide the router. Worked for me!
