xps L501X i5 processor incompatible with new replacement motherboard
Hi
I had a water spill on my xps L501x and did my mother board in, I ordered a replacement board and fitted it with few problems, fitting my i5 cpu off my damaged board into the new board. All went well till boot up and got error message arrandale cpu not supported on discrete platform. please use clarksfield cpu. Ok after checking up on this it appears that dell made a model with the i7 clarksfield core, and this is obviously the board i now have. My question is if i upgrade/buy a new intel Core i7-740QM Mobile Processor (6M cache, 1.73 GHz) SLBQG cpu and fit it to the board will every thing be ok or will i have another problem, ie with the power supply ect.appreciate any comments thanks

Most likely, that CPU will work -- that said, you may need a higher-wattage power supply and possibly an upgraded heatsink-fan assembly as well, particularly if you have a 90W or lower rated power supply now.

when you say that the cpu will work i am assuming that you mean the i7 clarksfield cpu, as for the powder supply it is a 90 w and i think that the Dell Xps 15 L501X i7-740M uses a 130 w , would this cause a battery problem as well? the heat sink and fan fit the new board perfectly with no room in the casing for a bigger fan or sink so think it should work fine!!

You should upgrade to a 130W power adapter - if you keep using the 90W it will either overheat or won't run the system at full speed. Most i7 notebooks ship with 130W or higher -- I have an ASUS N53 with an i7 that did.
