Start with an extended diagnostic on the hard drive -- it sounds like the drive is faulty.
F12 at powerup to get to the diagnostics - let the tests run (15 min or so) and then boot to the selective diagnostics and run an extended test on the drive (this will take up to several hours to run, depending on the capacity of the drive).
Did thorough Diagnostic tests, All passed, got Validation code. Checked error box at top, an error occurred, Fail PSA V4302. Error 2000-0114, CPU 1 (IDX1) did not reach test step 2.

That's a processor error -- which could mean either the CPU or mainboard is bad. I'd bet it's more likely the latter than the former.
