Inspiron 3650, boot OS from PCIe NVME M.2 SSD?

Hi everybody,

Can anybody confirm whether my Dell Inspiron 3650 can boot OS from PCIe NVME M.2 SSD or not because I plan to buy a new NVME SSD and slot into "NVME to PCIe adapter".

This all depends on whether your system BIOS allows booting from NVME devices. This statement from an adapter manufacturer sums it up...And I believe that the 3650 is 6th generation.

Supports any OS like Windows, Mac and Linux. Booting possible from M.2 NVMe SSD with compatible motherboards with supported BIOS (Support booting from PCIe). Intel 9 series and above chipset motherboards support booting from PCIe. This adapter card is a passive device so OS and System compatibility solely depends on SSD model used.

Check to see if PCIe is a boot option.  If it's not (and that's most likely for a model of this type), the answer is no.

B Keyed M2 devices are SATA not PCI-E

Devices with only M2 key are PCI-E.

@DELL-Chris M

should be able to tell you what models do or do not work.

Visually I do not see the 2280 M2 slot on the board.

#11 = M.2 Connector (NGFF1). Just not labelled in the external Inspiron 3650 Service Manual picture page 13. All the SSD we shipped on this model were SATA3. We only used that slot for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo card.

As to your question, unknown. We never tested a NVMe SSD in this model. All you can do is try it out and let us know.

BIOS Boot =
UEFI (Default Setting) or Legacy
Secure Boot Enabled
Load Legacy Option Rom Enabled
Boot Option Priorities Windows Boot Manager

The BIOS Boot only list =
Diskette Drive
Hard Drive
USB Storage Device
CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive
Network

NGFF SATA B Keyed or M Key only PCI-E AHCI? AFAIKT there is no PCI-E AHCI in 2242 size.  If there is what is the model?

That would have to be 2242 slot as its too short for 2280 or 22110.

The other Gotcha is that Caddies and cables do not seem to be included.

Did you ever test it? I want to buy one, but am worried it won't work.

I've tried this recently on an Inspiron 3650 trying to boot CentOS 7.7 from the SSD but I couldn't get it to work. It doesn't seem to work even if the /boot/efi partition is on HD as suggested on other threads relating to booting from NVMe. Perhaps you should try shrinking an HD partition and installing CentOS entirely on that. I've done this and the CentOS boot is reasonably quick. Also if you don't have 16GB of memory installed perhaps expanding this might give you sufficient performance improvement.
