Inspiron 3671, adding more RAM?

Question

I have an Inspiron 3671 with a single, Kingston 8GB, 2666Hz, memory. In order to upgrade the PC's RAM, I purchased an additional Samsung equivalent, installed it and it doesn't work (doesn't even boot up) i.e. isn't compatible, even if I remove the original Kingston memory. I understand (now!) that they have to be identical and purchased together. Is this correct and is Samsung memory (or any other brands) incompatible with this motherboard?  So, 2 questions: (1) what's the most cost effective way of having 16GB RAM in total?, (2) what are the restrictions on branded RAM that can be used in this PC? Thanks
