Inspiron 3880 Power supply
Hi, my son would like to install a video card in our new family pc a Dell Inspiron 3880. He is thinking we need a new power supply but when I looked in the case the power supply is long and skinny rather than the more square ones I am used too. Are there any good power supply recommendations for this case? Also as a follow up question is there a good graphics card that would fit this case rig without a psu upgrade?

Hello,
I have the Inspiron 3880 with a 200w PSU. I'm running 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD and a DVD r/w drive. I installed a Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 GPU and it works no problem. It's an entry-level card, for sure but it works better than the integrated graphics and no upgrade of your PSU is needed.

4 PIN is EPS12v connector so it may be 4 X 4

This is NOT the 8 pin PCI-E AUX power that splits into 6 and 2
Some power supply units (PSUs) use an 8-pin EPS12v CPU cable that can be split into two 4-pin connectors. If you want to connect the PSU into a 4-pin EPS motherboard port, simply pull the two halves of the connector apart and connect one half into the motherboard port.

MAX Combined power is 200W
This is NOT 30 AMPS
Volts X AMPS = watts 12V X 17 AMPS = 200W
MAX AMPS for any rail on a power supply is 18 AMPS.
You cannot use MAX Current on ALL RAILS at the same time.
12V X 30 Amps = 360W You are not getting that from the 200W power supply.

This PC comes with either a 200W or 260W PSU, both pretty wimpy for any decent video card.
I suspect it's is a proprietary PSU so you may have issues finding one with higher watts to fit inside this small case and has the right motherboard connector. Even the SATA hard drive gets power from the motherboard, rather than directly from the PSU as it would in other PCs.
The manual shows there's a PCI-e x16 slot on the motherboard for an add-in video card, but I don't see any cards listed for this model on Dell's site or elsewhere.
Search these forums or Google to see if anyone has upgraded this PSU...

Hi thanks for the reply. The power supply has 2 leads plugging in to the motherboard. One is a 4pin 2 yellow 2 black that connector labeled P2 and plugs in on the motherboard where labeled ATX CPU. The other lead is a 6 pin -2white 2black 1gray 1 green connector labeled P1 and plugs in to the motherboard labeled ATX Sys.

That's one of those proprietary PSUs.
You may be stuck using onboard Intel Graphics.

Contact Dell Spare Parts (have Service Tag handy) and ask what video card they recommend. You don't have to buy it from them (price is probably high) but at least you'll get an idea what might work with the wimpy PSU in this model.

Ugh I bought this model because it stated that it had PCIE slot for upgraded graphics card.

Hi @speedstep thank you for helping with this one. I got the recommended adapter from moddiy, and it takes care of the 6 pin connector. But can you help me figure out what cable I need to use for the 4 pin (ATX CPU according to the mboard) connector?

Hi there.. I just bought the 3880 and was going to install the 1030 as well. I need to drive 2 monitors (S2721HSX). I was going to use the HDMI port from the integrated GPU and then the other from the 1030 add-on.
I was reading that u need to upgrade the PSU to 300W.
Are u driving 2 monitors?
